Entropy

Feb 2024 | GLOAM Gallery

‘Entropy’ is a curated exhibition that underscores the intrinsic significance of material metamorphosis and deterioration. Emphasising value inherent in decay and material metamorphosis at the micro and macro scale, the collection asks for contemplation through site-specific work, craft and, design.

By reframing decay as a dynamic agent, this exhibition fosters deliberate discourse on its decisive role in design and architecture.

The Art of observation and Learning

As we culminate our existence, you are reminded of the worth as an observer and perpetual student. Through decay, adaptive reuse, crafts-woman-ship, and the human experience, your lens offers profound insight into design and architectural evolution. Each facet scrutinised reveals layers of complexity and depth, inviting contemplation on the interplay between tradition and innovation, impermanence, and resilience. Embracing the ethos of relentless inquiry, you are exposed to the transcended confines of materiality, and unveiling the enigmatic depths of human existence and the dedication of seeing deeply into all things.

Unveiling the dynamics of Design and Architectural Decay

This exhibition serves as an exploration into the intricate and dependent interplay between architectural decay and design dynamics. The collection delves into five territories, intending to facet material transformation and societal relevance.

The Silent Observers

Central to this thematic inquiry is the exploration of material as a silent witness to human existence. As an ongoing reflection of humanities temporality, materials bear the scars of human existence, reflecting the ephemeral nature of our endeavours. Through fissures and decaying surfaces, material narrates its own narrative of continuation and reality. You are confronted with these silent observers, of our mortality, and finding solace and familiarity amidst the material and the elegance of its temporal deterioration.

Adaptive Reuse and Craft-woman-ship

Within you are exposed to the tone of adaptive reuse in architectural design and traditional craft-woman-ship. The exhibition seeks to depict the hierarchical implications in these contexts, while unveiling the intrinsic value of crafts-woman-ship and heritage design. This is intentionally juxtaposing traditional practices with modern industrial design, production, and construction, you are shown the enduring relevance of craft and how contemporary material inoculation merits its own individual attention.

Material Metamorphosis

The exposition initiates through the interrogation of material decay as a catalysis for design development. Material metamorphosis as a phenomenological observant, you are urged to consider the temporal nature of existence and the embodied experience of design and architectural space. Decay emerges not only as a physical process but also as a reflection of humanities temporality, a biological exchange and evolving relationship between the individual and the environment.

Suffering and Devotion to Design

The exhibition itself is shrouded in an overtone of suffering and unwavering devotion to the practice of design. Architects and Designers immerse themselves relentlessly in its pursuit, akin to devotion, while allowing to the physical form to be engulfed in its essence. Through creation, designers navigate human emotion, societal implication and injustice, capitalism, consumerism, human aspiration, etc., bearing its weight with an expectation of unwavering commitment. This dedication to the multidisciplinary craft, design becomes a transcendent activity as a witness to the profound reflection of the human condition.
